“Poverty is the worst form of violence.” — Mahatma Gandhi, Indian political and spiritual leader

Recently, a post on my social media feed had gotten my attention. I follow one of the local news channels on Facebook, and every now and then some editorial type of post like this shows up. Tens of thousands likes and hearts on this particular post. The picture that was shown was that of a man who looked somewhat downtrodden. Sitting, slumped with his back to the camera. He looked to be an older white man. Sitting across from him, a masked Black police officer.

“Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime.”

I watched Nomadland at the request of a friend. She recommended I watch it, get back to her and we could do a podcast episode on it. She didn’t tell me anything about, and I didn’t know anything about it when she mentioned it. Nor did I want to know. For something like this I wanted to go in blind with no prejudice. I didn’t read a review, I didn’t IMDB it, just sat down after the family was sleep and just pressed play. About 10 minutes in I thought…

“The oppressed are allowed once every few years to decide which particular representatives of the oppressing class are to represent and repress them.”

Today I had to go to the grocery store. It’s now a task I no longer look forward too. Where once I could look forward to the occasional light banter with a stranger over how much things have changed in the ever changing and gentrifying Bay Area, or whatever be the pop political moment of the day, now we all keep or distance and try not get or spread the virus to one another. The social distance…

The paradox of vengefulness is that it makes men dependent upon those who have harmed them, believing that their release from pain will come only when they make their tormentors suffer. Laura Hillenbrand

I started watching the first Sunday of the 2020 NFL football season with a slight feeling of excitement. For over 30 years, the NFL (in particular my Denver Broncos) has been the great distraction of the mondacity of life for me. And like many other Americans, specially those on the West Coast, I was in dire need of one. We’re currently still on lockdown from a deadly…

I got my test results back sooner than I expected. This time I didn’t even have the butterflies in my stomach when I went with my co-worker and childhood friend to take the test at the drive through testing place just minutes from the job. But getting that email, I was nervous. All the confidence I had up to that moment seeped out in a limp sigh. My phone couldn’t load the results fast enough. The large blue NEGATIVE was all I needed to see. I could return home and hug my child and I could lay next to my…

“Freedom in capitalist society always remains about the same as it was in ancient Greek republics: Freedom for slave owners.”
― Vladimir Lenin

We are still in lockdown in most of America, and we’re still waiting for a real federal aid package to help us citizens not just the 1% and major corporations. The statistics are bleak. Over 33,000,000 Americans have filed for unemployment, I didn’t say they’ll be receiving the benefits, that’s just the number of people that have tried to get through to their local EDD office for days on end, waited on hold for countless hours, and…

With endorsements from Bernie Sanders and Barack Obama, it looks like Joe Biden is going to be the democratic presidential nominee. His path to victory is being trailblazed by an inept Trump administration. Trump and his merry band of comic book villains are gladly paving his road to victory by using a pandemic as a daily campaign rally. The daily White House COVID-19 briefings aren’t even shown in some markets due to the massive amounts of misinformation they possess.

And what did we in Germany experience when the great historical test came? The most precipitous fall, the most violent collapse. Nowhere has the organization of the proletariat been yoked so completely to the service of imperialism. Nowhere is the state of siege borne so docilely. Nowhere is the press so hobbled, public opinion so stifled, the economic and political class struggle of the working class so totally surrendered as in Germany. -Rosa Luxemburg from Junius Pamphlet Chapter I

Another rollback of Obama era environmental protections happening under the Trump administration. This time it’s the fuel standards. The rule calls…

I read today about a 17 year old boy in Lancaster, CA died due to complications from the Coronavirus. He didn’t have any previously reported health conditions. He was denied treatment at a hospital because he didn’t have health insurance. He was turned away because he couldn’t afford to live. This boy, like many in America, the richest nation in the world, wasn’t worthy of life. We can’t afford it. It’s too costly to insure the nation. We don’t want to be Communist China or the U.S.S.R in the 80’s. The free market will provide and we will better off…
